Ep. 190 – As Good As It Gets

as_good_as_it_gets_poster

Episode 190: The Crew’s sidestepping the cracks in the sidewalk as they discuss, As Good As It Gets. It’s a fun, feel good romantic comedy with a main character who is a complete jerk. But he’s really a teddy bear. Yes, that sounds like loads of romantic comedies, but the writing and acting elevate this to something really special. The character’s motivations make sense and the three leads all have full character arcs. The film was a box-office hit (grossing $148 million) during Titanic’s historic box-office run. It was nominated for 7 Academy Awards, winning 2 for Best Actor and Best Actress.

Ep. 188 – Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith

RevengeOftheSith_Poster

Episode 188: The Crew’s discussing Star Wars – Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. It’s the last film of the prequel trilogy and the last Star Wars film George Lucas wrote & directed. And Mr. Lucas does up his game; the action scenes are more exciting, the dialogue isn’t as wooden, and some of the actors look like they’re having fun. The return of Darth Vader in the marketing helped make this the second highest-grossing Star Wars film at the time. But the Crew is a little disappointed with Vader’s reason for turning to the dark side… they discuss.

Ep. 187 – Star Wars: Attack of the Clones

AttackoftheClones

Episode 187: The Crew’s discussing Star Wars – Episode II: Attack of the Clones. It’s Star Wars, but it’s not a good film. The horrible dialogue and performances hold the film back, especially in the romantic subplot. The overall plot is confusing and makes all the Jedi look stupid. And this is the lowest grossing Star Wars film in the saga; adjusted for inflation. But the Crew does find some good things to say.

Ep. 186 – Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

PhantomMenacePoster

Episode 186: The Crew’s discussing one of the most overhyped films of all-time, Star Wars – Episode I: The Phantom Menace. In the summer of 1999 everyone was excited for Star Wars, and Episode One was the second highest grossing film at the time. Flash forward to today, and most fans consider it the worst installment in the franchise. Story and acting issues aside, there is a lot to love here. The pod race is jaw dropping and the climatic lightsaber battle is truly incredible. The Crew is heavily divided on this film.

Correction: Episode One’s budget was $115 million, not $65 million (that was the opening weekend box-office $). Sorry for the mistake.

Episode 184: The Crew’s discussing, arguably the greatest sequel ever made, James Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day. It’s a perfect sci-fi action film! The Crew has nothing but great things to say about one of the most important landmark films of all-time. It was a box office smash, the most expensive film made at the time, and won 4 Oscars. This film’s impact on modern filmmaking cannot be overstated enough, but the Crew tries.

Ep. 183 – The Terminator

Terminator1984Poster

Episode 183: The Crew’s running from a time traveling cyborg as they discuss James Cameron’s The Terminator (1984). This film is the perfect chase movie, never losing its pace once. Arnold Schwarzenegger became an action icon and a household name after this film, in one of his rare villain performances (don’t forget Mr. Freeze). Linda Hamilton and Michael Biehn are great, but their careers never got the boost Arnold’s did. And Stan Winston’s makeup is jaw-dropping for a $6.4 million film made in 1984.

Brad Fiedel’s score is great! Here’s the download link on Apple Music.

Ep. 182 – Freddy vs. Jason, and A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)

FreddyVJason_Nightmare2010poster

Episode 182: The Crew’s discussing Freddy vs. Jason and the 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. Freddy vs. Jason was the highest grossing installment of both the Nightmare and Friday franchises. Robert Englund returns to the Freddy role, but New Line Cinema hired a new actor for Jason, leaving Kane Hodder fans disappointed. Fans were happy with the results regardless, and Hollywood started making the vs. films (Alien vs Predator came out the next year). The 2010 Nightmare remake again was a box office hit (highest grossing Nightmare film Worldwide), but the critical and audience reaction was horrible, and a sequel never happened. The film looks great, and Jackie Earle Haley makes the Freddy role his own. He’s so good, but the story never feels fresh and questioning whether Freddy is a villain or not is a waste of screen time. The Crew discusses…
